A first glimpse of Oweynagat, a new digital installation and audiovisual journey into the Otherworld I’m currently working on.
A red-lit passage.
Stone folding into stone.
Shapes flickering at the edge of the dark.
Every so often, something small and black moves where nothing seemed to be a moment before.
The piece takes its name from Oweynagat, the Cave of the Cats at Rathcroghan in Ireland, the ancient royal centre of Connacht.
In Irish mythology, the cave was regarded as a threshold between worlds, associated with the warrior-queen Medb and with strange creatures and forces emerging from below around Samhain.
Rather than retelling those stories directly, Oweynagat takes the idea of the cave as a threshold and lets it mutate.
The journey moves through repetition, fractured light, shifting stone, changing scale and an evolving soundscape.
The deeper it goes, the less certain it becomes whether the cave itself is changing or whether something is changing in the way it is being perceived.
For now, it remains somewhere between a technical experiment, a digital environment and a piece of folklore that has wandered into the machinery.
Still building.
More soon. 🖤
