Soap & Slop Launderette is on the corner of Brinkrow End Terrace. Humdrum washing machines groan through the night. Steam clouds the grimy windows, the air’s thick with damp and cheap detergent.
Locals shuffle in with their baskets, muttering about nowt much or watching the machines in a trance like they hold summat more interesting than their dirty kecks.
The change machine’s a liar! Always swallowing coins more than it spits them out and them dryers only work when they feel like it…
Folk linger, even after their washing’s done – half for the warmth, half for the gossip that tumbles out just as freely.
